Calla Lilies are perennial plants that mainly grow in wet environments in the northern hemisphere, in the cool temperate regions.
They are actually not lilies - rather, they are plants that are within the family Araceae. (Actuall lilies are in the family Liliaceae.)
Regardless, we think they look rather special.
Did you know that Calla Lilies are the traditional flowers given to celebrate the sixth wedding anniversary?
They come after the Daisy - on the fifth anniversary - and the Fresia (also called the Jack-in-the-Pulpit) for the seventh wedding anniversary.
Of course, a calla lily makes an ideal wedding flower, too!
The actual name for the Cala Lily is Zantedeschia, although that's rather more difficult to remember and spell!
The common names for the varieties of Zantedeschia are:
The various Zantedeschia plants are rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plants, and typically reach a height of 100-250cm, with leaves of between 15 and 45cm in length.
Florists in the UK quite often sell gorgeous bouquets featuring the Calla Lily - and you'll find a fantastic selection of them on this website.
As well as calla bouquets, you'll find them available as houseplants, as cake toppers, as a corsage, as a wedding buttonhole, and in sheafs for funerals.
Although cala lillies aren't the cheapest flowers in the UK, they are absolutely beautiful, and well worth the investment.
